Barrett's esophagus ,also known as intestinal metaplasia of the esophageal lining, is considered the most severe form of reflux. It is considered to be a premalignant condition that carries a significant risk for the development of esophageal cancer if left untreated. When abnormal cells arise within these affected segments, the risk of cancer is even higher. In addition to adequately managing reflux symptoms, some patients may benefit from ablation (BARRX) or destruction of these cells that allows the regrowth of more normal tissue.
