Gastric Balloon placement is a non-surgical, completely reversible procedure that is proven to be extremely effective as a treatment for obesity. The procedure offers numerous advantages over traditional diets, weight loss programs, and invasive surgical procedures. It can be an excellent option for individuals who have been unsuccessful at their weight loss attempts, do not qualify for other forms of bariatric surgery, or are interested in alternative solutions to meet their weight loss goals.

Is the Gastric Balloon Procedure Right for You?

If you have been unsuccessful at reaching your weight loss goals, this procedure may be an effective solution. You may be a good candidate for this treatment if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Do not meet the criteria for more invasive weight loss surgeries
  • Have a BMI (body mass index) of 27 or greater
  • Are not currently pregnant and do not intend on becoming pregnant for at least six months
  • Need assistance in complying with a prescribed diet
  • Have never had bariatric surgery
  • Do not have a history of bowel obstruction
  • Need to lose weight in order to qualify for a more invasive weight loss surgery

Gastric balloon treatment is not recommended for individuals who:

  • Have severe liver, kidney or lung disease
  • Have undergone gastrointestinal surgery
  • Have a history of bowel obstruction
  • Have undergone long-term steroid treatment
  • Have a large hiatus hernia
  • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Are addicted to drugs or alcohol
  • Are not ready to commit to new eating habits
While the placement of intragastric balloons does not yet exist in the United States, they are being performed in other countries and have been for many years.  Perhaps, one day soon, this method of fighting the obesity war will come to us.  Additionally the use of this technology is always coupled with a long-term, regimented nutritional and behavioral program to ensure a successful outcome.
